Item Description
7x10.5” stapled magazine with 52 pages. Color covers with bw contents. Published by Howard Ainslee & Co. of New York, Jun. 5, 1897. Yellow Kid is seen on deck of ship holding nautical telescope and wearing deer stalker cap, his yellow rainslicker coat reading “Me And De Captain Is Runnin Dis Ship.” Jolly Captain stands behind Yellow Kid with his hand resting on signal. Back cover has image of Yellow Kid promoting “The New York Sunday Journal” with his shirt reading “Say! Wots De Matter Wit Dat Combination Kin Yez Beat It? Nit!” Typical magazine contents of turn-of-the-century America with several comical stories and bw illustrations as well as product ads. Of note, full page ad for books about Ulysses S. Grant, Generals Sherman and Sheridan. Yellow Kid is seen twice throughout magazine, once in small header illustration and again on last page advertising magazine for 5¢ an issue. Only 9 issues of this magazine were published before becoming “The Yellow Book.” Top 1” corner is clipped. Taped reinforcement to interior along spine. Last page and back cover have moderate tape repairs to margins. Back cover has heavy wear with tiny tape repair and color rubs. Good. All issues of this series are extremely rare.
