Item Description
Lot of 2. First is 7x8.5” “Bainbridge Commodores/1945 Baseball Program & Scorecard.” Cover montage has caption “Scenes From Opening Game 1945 Season/Tome Stadium/U.S. Naval Training Center Bainbridge, Maryland/Welfare And Recreation Department.” Unused scorecard. Player list for “Curtis Bay Coast Guard/Commodores.” Stan Musial was assigned to the Bainbridge Naval Training Center on March 17, 1945 and played for the Commodores baseball team. His name is not listed in score card. However, Dick Wayfield, Stan Spence and Dick Sisler do appear. All went on to greater baseball careers. Center vertical/horizontal crease. Fine. Second is 7x10” fold-over scorecard. Illustration by L. T. Topper-USNR. Cover reads “American vs. National League/1945 All-Stars.” In the Fall of 1945, the Navy staged its own world series in the Hawaiian Islands with the best players from the ten-team 14th Naval District League grouped into American League and National League clubs. Unused scorecard does list Ted Williams along with Bob Lemon, Bob Kennedy, Al Lyons and others on the A.L. All-Star roster. Team manager was Schoolboy Rowe of the Detroit Tigers. For the National League, Billy Herman was manager from the Brooklyn Dodgers. Players included Stan Musial, Ray Coombs, Dick West and Jim Carlin. Back cover has additional cartoon illustration with text at bottom reading “Sponsored By The 14th Naval District Athletic Association.” Center crease and heavy handling wear, age tanning. Fine.
