Item Description
First is 2-1/8” reading “Fran Youngstein For Mayor/Free Libertarian Party/Tanstaafl.” Libertarian icon Samuel Edward Konkin (a.k.a. SEK III ) (see item #388) called Youngstein’s 1973 campaign for mayor of New York the Libertarian Party’s first “real” campaign. Next is a button for another early party candidate reading “Harroff U.S. Senator.” She was running in Ohio, 1974 and made a good showing but was not successful. Three tiny age marks on the rim edge. Third is 1.75” reading “Tanstaafl/Libertarian Party Of Washington State.” Next and also from 1970s is 1.25” in day-glo reading “Tanstaafl.” That inscription on 3 of the buttons in this group stands for “There Ain’t No Such Thing As A Free Lunch.” The 5th button is 2-1/8” reading “Fight The Draft/The New Resistance/Students For A Libertarian Society.” Also see poster with this design, item #154. Last is a 2.25” button reading “Russell Means/Freedom For New Mexico.” In 2001 Means was an Independent candidate for governor but he did not get on the ballot.
