Item Description
Striking 7/8” button in black and deep orange with silver toned eagle’s head at center bears the group’s name on the rim “Mission Indian Federation Of California.” Smaller text beneath the eagle reads “The First Americans/Justice Under Law.” This group was Southern California’s most popular and longest active grass-roots political organization. Beginning in 1919, the group helped change the fact that prior to 1924 many native Americans could not become United States citizens. Members of this group helped influence that change. The button itself probably dates from the 1940s. It is attached to a 4.75” tall ribbon badge with inscription “Honorary Member” on the fabric while card inserted in brass holder reads in typed letters “Hon. Thos. Jenkins.” Ribbon and button were likely used at a convention. N. Mint with Mint button. Rare.
