Item Description
1.5” beautifully colored and designed button showing river valley with 2 groups of men on each side of the stream facing each other behind rows of trees. Inset below in yellow beaded oval depicts John Brown with text on ribbons reading “John Brown 1856-Aug. 30-1906.” Text on the rim is “Semi-Centennial Celebration Of The Battle Of Osawatomie.” Extreme edge has exceedingly light traces of stain showing. There is a single dot at the top and 3 or 4 dots on the extreme right edge but blending well with the color. The button is missing its W&H paper. This event refers to the struggle over slavery in Kansas. In May of 1856 Brown and his sons attacked the cabins of 2 pro-slavery settlers and killed 5 men. In August of 1856, pro-slavery forces numbering 250 men attacked Brown and his forces numbering only 30 so Brown was forced to retreat. The town was burned and Brown lost a son during the battle which became known as the Battle of Osawatomie – the largest battle of the “Bleeding Kansas” era. One of only 3 examples we’ve seen. Comes with Hake’s COA.
