Originally the “Chicago 8”, Hoffman refused to allow defendant Bobby Seale to represent himself prompting conflicts that led Hoffman to order Seale gagged and shackled and eventually jailed for contempt reducing the defendants to 7. Defendants Abbie Hoffman (see next item), Jerry Rubin and others often insulted Hoffman but all 7 were found not guilty of conspiracy with 5 of them found guilty of inciting a riot. Hoffman imposed the maximum penalty on those 5 although by 1972 all of Hoffman’s contempt citations and all of the substantive convictions were reversed on numerous grounds.
