Item Description
2” commemorates events of May 4, 1970 when 4 students were killed and 9 wounded during anti-war protests on the Kent State campus. The button depicts artwork of a kneeling girl in shock alongside the body of a fallen student. This artwork is taken directly from John Filo’s Pulitzer prize-winning photograph of Mary Ann Vecchio, a 14-yr-old runaway, kneeling over the body of Jeffrey Miller after he was killed by the Ohio National Guard. Button’s tin back has lost its bright luster and the celluloid front has very tiny traces of wear in reflected light but the button still displays essentially Mint. A very scarce issue by the “Yippie” movement founded in 1969 by Jerry Rubin, Abbie Hoffman and others as the Youth International Party.
