Item Description
The four celluloid inserts on these pieces have all taken on a dark tan color but there is no spotting of the celluloid. The only other obvious age is tan stain and spotting on the white bkg. fabric of the largest badge but this is not too obvious as the top fabric layer designed as a flag as well as the celluloid suspension covers most of the affected area. These pieces going from smallest to largest, include 4” tall brass rimmed 1.5” celluloid with reverse collet suspending 2.75” deep purple ribbon. Celluloid shows Lincoln beneath two fire hoses. Attached purple ribbon has silver lettering reading “Firemen’s Parade Sommerville, N.J. Oct. 19, 1899.” Reverse has large label from maker Sommer Badge Co. of Newark. Second item is 8” tall with silver metal bar pin holding red fabric inscribed in silver “Dover, N.J.” Lower fabric reads “Vigilant Engine Co. No. 2 Guests Of Lincoln Hose Co. No. 4, Sommerville, N.J., Oct. 19, 1899.” This is the same date as the previous item. Center of this piece is 1.5” holding cello insert depicting fire fighters attacking large building fire. Again, reverse has same maker label as previous item. Third and largest item is 9” tall with brass bar pin inscribed “Vigilant.” 1.75” celluloid suspension pictures elderly man in fire uniform and reads “Our Mayor George Pearson.” Gold lettering below “Cataract Hose Co. 1, Of Hackettstown, N.J. Guest Of Vigilant Engine Co. No. 2 Dover, N.J. Oct. 6, 1897.” Again, reverse has large label by maker Sommer.
