Item Description
12x28” high quality frame contains original pen and inked art that has been professionally matted to 6-3/8x22.25”. The Shmoo debuted on Aug. 31, 1948. Art is for Dec., 1948 daily strip from the “Sadie Hawkins Day Race” storyline that features a female Abner look-alike whose goal is to catch and marry Abner in the Sadie Hawkins Day race. Three-panel story shows female Abner look-alike having just knocked out Abner with club as Shmoo looks on. Second panel shows the look-alike with Abner slung over her shoulder in silhouette as Shmoo excitedly looks on. The 3 are again seen in silhouette in third panel in which tree gets struck by lightning bolt. Second panel has United Features Syndicate, Inc. paste-over. First panel has been signed by series creator Al Capp. Brass nameplate attached reading “1st Shmoo Story - 1948 Artist: Al Capp ‘Sadie Hawkins Days Race’.” Some lt. scattered aging but art remains Exc. A great, early example of one of the most endearing L’il Abner characters – the Shmoo.
