Item Description
8x13x19.5” tall painted solid wood display (part turned, part hand carved) depicting Centaurette with arms raised above her head, flowers in one hand, hair on back of head in a large bun configured like a bunch of grapes and she wears a leaf bra. High relief design on base depicts additional flowers and leaves. On front edge of base is metal plaque that reads “Designed For Walt Disney Productions Properties Produced By W.L. Stensgaard & Associates Inc. “ with 1940 copyright. This company made store displays and promotional items for Disney. Text on underside of base reads “This Unit Is The Property Of Davenport Hosiery Mills And Is Loaned For The Exclusive Showing Of Humming Bird Nylon Hosiery And Is To Be Returned Upon Request Or Any Time That You Want To Discontinue Its Use.” This display was used to introduce the first colored women’s nylon hosiery. These figures were painted in different color combinations representing the different colors of stockings being introduced. Although not shown in our photo, display does come with an original (but unmarked) pair of Humming Bird stockings in blonde shade matching Centaurette’s hair. These stockings were obtained from a lady who was a young hosiery counter salesgirl in 1940 who remembered the display pieces and the fact they were to be returned to the company as indicated by text on underside. The display’s front raised leg was broken but has been professionally repaired with perfect color match rendering the repair essentially undetectable. There is a surface hairline to raised arm holding flowers and an additional 3” hairline on right center of body but these are not breaks and all remains structurally sound. These hairlines are only noticeable when viewed closely. Display does have some additional scattered traces of aging but overall remains bright and very impressive. Still displays as VF. One of the very best and rarest of all Fantasia items. We have only offered one other in our 44 years and that was many years ago. This is the actual example shown on Tomart’s Illustrated Disneyana Catalogue And Price Guide Volume Four. From the Tomart Archives and comes with COA signed by Tom Tumbusch and Ted Hake.
