Item numbers 1409 through 3152 in auction 201
Item Description
24x35.75” canvas with mixed media painting of the title character from Howard Hawk’s classic 1951 sci-fi film “The Thing From Another World.” Noted illustrator Harold Shull has painted James Arness as The Thing, using noted horror illustrator Bernie Wrightson as his model. Shull began as a cartoonist for The Baltimore News American newspaper and made his mark in various fields, going on to design packages and toys for Knickerbocker, Mego and H.G. Toys. Shull later received commissions to do illustrations for the New York Yankees, NBC-TV, Warner Bros. and others. This piece was a proposed cover for “Famous Monsters Of Filmland” magazine but was never used. 1969. Blank area at top of canvas for magazine title/logo. Scattered crazing where black bkg. field blends into red field at middle of painting. Scattered color rubs, a few on lower portion of The Thing image. Fine.
