Item Description
Extensive lot of 11 pieces all from the Warren Publishing Co. archives. Correspondence is between artist Dave Ludwig and James Warren, president of Warren Publishing Co. First is mimeographed sheet on Warren letterhead dated 11/19/1974 from James to Ludwig noting the enclosure of a $100 check for “Your Angry Red Planet Cover Painting Which We Will Utilize In A Future FM Cover.” Additional text notes “I Think The Cover Is Worth $100, Rather Than The $75 I Told You We Would Pay Originally. On Subsequent Covers Your Rate Will Be $175 On Anything We Accept.” Warren goes on to state “I Would Like To See What You Could Produce On The Enclosed Case Of M. Valdemar Segment Of Tales Of Terror Showing Vincent Price Attacking Basil Rathbone. Get Plenty Of Exciting, Colorful, Dramatic And Powerful Detailing Into This Cover - And I’m Sure You’ll Come Up A Winner.” The next item is typed letter from Ludwig to Warren dated June 16, 1975 in which he mentions the enclosed cover painting for which he got the go-ahead to do at $175. He goes into detail about his work on the painting as well as enclosure of 5 additional cover roughs of other themes. Letter is accompanied by an invoice to Warren. Next is 4x7” hand-written note from James to Dave noting that the painting is not “Exactly What We’re Looking For – For FM Covers.” Following item is a letter from Dave back to James, dated July 5, 1975, in which he states “The Unceremonious Memo You Enclosed Has Me So Puzzled That I’m Writing Again To See If I Can Get Some Fuller Explanation.” He goes on to state he would like a further explanation of why his art was rejected when at first it seemed like he got a positive response. Taped to this letter is 3.5x3.5” original snapshot of his painted artwork. Final group of 6 pieces are 8.5x11” sheets of paper, each with nicely-done pencil original art cover roughs with typed information underneath each relating to what film inspired the art and other pertinent details. Each original art area is 4x5.5”, one is for “The Case Of M. Valdemar” while the others are “The Day The World Ended, The Magic Sword, Invaders From Mars, From Hell It Came, Hands Of The Ripper.” Sheets have scattered aging and some paper clip rust to top margins but all art remains Exc. Other papers have scattered aging and handling wear. Fine to VF. A very interesting group.
