Item Description
Quite heavy ceramic vase has 3” base decorated with 12 vertical feather-like designs accented in gold. The vase then flares outward 6” dia. with high relief images of Garfield, a smaller Washington, a large Garfield and then a smaller Louis Kossuth. On the deep purple bkg. there are designs of raised vines and leaves surrounding the 2 smaller portraits. The vase then tapers and flares at the top to 4.25” dia. The only chip is a .25x3/8” flake off the upper lip but shallow and blends in color tone. One image of Garfield has 9/16” vertical stress line across his bow tie vertically. There is no maker’s name or other markings. Kossuth was a Hungarian known as a “Freedom Fighter” and for promoting Democracy. He toured the US in the 1850s to great fanfare and crowds. He followed Lafayette in being only the second foreign citizen to address a joint session of Congress. He is still honored today with several American towns bearing his name plus statues scattered across the country. He died in Italy in 1894. Likely the vase was produced for the 1880 campaign in some area with concentration of Hungarian immigrants. The vase is the only example known to us. A very impressive work of ceramic. From the Morry Greener Collection.
