Item numbers 1 through 1408 in auction 201
Item Description
4.5x7”. c. 1880s. Terence V. Powderly was the leader of the Knights Of Labor from 1879 to 1893. During those years, the KOL’s achieved their greatest influence and numerical strength. Powderly was personally opposed to the use of work stoppages, but strikes brought them increased power. The high water mark was undoubtedly the taming of J. Gould and his Missouri Pacific Railroad in 1885. This stiff paper trade card depicts 2 brick layers with text below “Worthy Of Their Hire.” Powderly’s image and name appear in upper right. Advertising text at upper left reads “Visit A.L. Foster & Co., The Reliable, Clothiers And Hatters, 45 Asylum Street/Hartford, Conn.” Back of card has lengthy text stating the features and benefits of the quality products available at this clothier. Age tanned. Corner crease at bottom right. .25x.25” old clear tape at upper right. Color remains bright. Fine
