Item Description
1-5/8”. No designer name, but reverse is same scene as black family by Davis on items #219-220. Obverse has profile of British Abolitionist and author of book The West Indies in 1837, an expose of the cruelty of slavery. In Jamaica, he founded “Free Villages” with the Baptists to provide living quarters for freed slaves. Front has his profile and name with surrounding text “Slavery Abolished Aug. 1. 1838/Anti Slavery Society Formed At St. Anns Bay Dec. 9. 1839.” Reverse reads “Temperance Industry And Happiness/Emancipation Aug. 1 1838.” Medal has st. bend on lower right side between 3/5 o’clock that shows little from the front or back but is a little noticeable when viewed from the side edge. Lt. wear on the surfaces and with most luster remaining.
