Item Description
An outstanding rare set of ferrotypes in remarkable condition. Each is 1” dia. with a 3/8” long cord loop. Each ferrotype has a tiny geometric accent at the center left and right with the candidate’s first and last name above. A brass circle encloses the ferrotype and the plush velvet-like rims are maroon for Lincoln and Bell and black for Douglas and Breckenridge. The Lincoln/Hamlin is DeWitt 1860-108 featuring what DeWitt calls Lincoln portrait #1. Lincoln has a single raised emulsion dot 1/32” in dia. on his right hairline. A microscopic pinpoint dot of emulsion is gone but no metal shows. This tiny 1/32” area shows only as a minute raised dot in reflected light. The Hamlin side is essentially Mint. The Douglas/Johnson is DeWitt 1860-45 featuring what DeWitt calls Douglas portrait #1. The Douglas ferro is a little dark but all is easily seen. The Johnson is less dark. Both emulsions are essentially flawless. The Bell/Everett is unlisted in DeWitt. Both emulsions are essentially flawless. The Breckenridge/Lane is DeWitt 1860-40. The Breckenridge ferro is a little dark with the last letters of his name partly covered by the brass rim as made. The emulsion is essentially flawless. The Lane ferro is also dark but details still clear. There is a very st. scuff on his nose and to the right side. This is only 1/16” tall and 1/8” long, just barely noticeable as it is on the emulsion surface and has no depth. On all 4 ferrotypes the plush and cords are essentially Mint. A truly superior set on the three all-important scales of rarity, condition and desirability.
