Auction #201 - Part I
Item numbers 1 through 1408 in auction 201
Item Description
1.5” (38mm). DeWitt lists this as AL1860-19, a variety of his AL1860-18. The obverse design of both has bust of Lincoln with text “For President Abraham Lincoln Of Illinois.” On the shoulder is the name of the engraver “True.” The back of the piece has an eagle with shield and tip of shield rests on a section of the globe. The variety numbered “18” is described as the “Broad Shield.” Variety we are offering here is described as the “Narrow Shield” and this differs from the previous in that the bottom point of the shield is set more deeply on the globe and the upper points of the shield flare outward rather than being straight up. This “19” variety is made of lead. The medals used for “18” were silver, copper, brass, gilt white metal and white metal. DeWitt’s comment for this item reads “Note: The Existence Of This Variety In Lead Only Probably Indicates That It Was Issued As A Trial Piece. The Reverse Die Was Referred To As The ‘Narrow Shield’ Variety.” Couple of tiny dents around the rim edges. Front bkg. has some small marks including a couple of .5” rub lines on the left bkg. but these do not go deep into the medal and just make a little variation in the tone of the gray color. Rare and Fine.
