Item Description
1-7/16” lustrous white metal medal with very high relief bust and text on front “U.S. Grant/Philada. Reception Dec. 16; 1879.” The reverse of the medal is blank but it has a 2.25” long soldered steel stickpin. Small luster loss of the silvering where the solder was applied. Front has 2 tiny scratches at lower right but displays Exc. Issued for a huge public reception of General U.S. Grant upon his return to Philadelphia and the conclusion of his 2 year journey around the world. The military and civic procession required 4 hours and 40 minutes to pass a given point. It was 6.5 miles in length and was estimated to have 40,000 participants seen by 350,000 spectators. This huge outpouring of admiration was partially the inspiration for his third term plans in 1880. Rare.
