Item Description
This rare 1.25” jugate is catalogued as Hake #12 with 2004 Revised Price value of $1,500. This example displays beautifully but has a single barely visible cello crack. The slogan is “Let Well Enough Alone” with very tiny text on lower curl edge “Copyright 1904 by Lacey & Thomas, Chicago.” Depicted is a working man’s lunch pail with a design on the front of the pince-nez style glasses favored by Theodore Roosevelt. The images of him and Fairbanks on the lens areas are without dot pattern as is the rest of the design. The single defect is a hairline cello crack starting at the upper left corner of the lunch pail lid and extending to the right and slightly downward 7/16”. This fine hairline is visible, mostly just in reflected light and under close inspection. The cream bkg. of the pail has the slightest bit of tone here and there resulting from what are thread-like near microscopic lines in the printing and under the celluloid as made. We would assume that all examples of this rare button would have similar markings under magnification. Reverse is covered tin with fixed horizontal bar pin. There is an extremely faint 1898 patent mark stamped on the tin reverse. High gloss, beautiful and rare with an opening bid that more than accounts for the nearly invisible hairline crack.
