Item Description
This is a 7/8” embossed brass lapel stud with scene of Taft from the back showing him in checkered suit coat and pants carrying cane and suitcase walking on a pathway towards the U.S. Capitol in the distance. The reverse of the piece is black metal with an extending silvered metal lapel stud. Condition is Mint and the piece is listed as Hake #183. We recently discovered an article from the New York Times of Nov. 12, 1911. The scene on this lapel stud is a symbolic reference to the article’s 4 headlines which read in order “President Taft Ends His 15,000-Mile Tour/Will Arrive In Washington To-day After Visiting Thirty States In 57-Day Trip/Made Almost 350 Speeches/After A Short Rest He Will Begin Work On His Third Annual Message To Congress.” The first paragraph of the article notes that Taft is currently in Bristol, Tenn. and continues “Only A Little Less Than 300 Miles From Home. He Is Due To Reach The Capitol Early To-Morrow, And Will Take A Day Or Two Of Rest Before Beginning Work On His Third Annual Message To Congress. This Message, The President’s Friends Say, Will Be One Of The Most Important He Has Ever Written.” We will include a photocopy of the article with the item. From the Morry Greener Collection.
