Item numbers 1 through 1408 in auction 201
Item Description
This visually striking fully three-dimensional donkey head is hollow and made of molded hard composition material. The piece is 2” tall at the flat back of the head where a vertical .5” stickpin is located at the top edge thus qualifying the item as a badge. The head extends forward 2.5” with wonderful molded detail including bulging eyes and open mouth. A thin wooden rod runs through the head and holds a pair of molded ears each 2.25” long. A string extends from a hole on the underside of the head. When the piece is worn, the ears stick up and by tugging on the string, they can be made to move forward and backwards; however, the movement occurs best if the ears are not laying against the body and if they have some room to move back and forth. The piece actually works much better held in the hand and in this case pulling on the string causes the ears to move upwards and downwards nearly a full 180°. On the flat back of the head, a plain white label with red border (20% missing due to insects) holds a 4” long yellow ribbon reading “National Democratic Convention/Baltimore Md/1912.” The ribbon has a couple tiny age dots and trivial 1/16” edge split. The donkey has a thin but visible age stress line running from the mid bridge of the nose and continuing down the nose front and onto the underside of the mouth back to the position of the hole the string extends from. While this hairline is visible, it is not something that causes a problem or will get any worse. Lt. general age to the paint but near 100% intact. A fascinating and very striking huge figural mechanical badge and the only example known to us. Rare.
