Item numbers 1 through 1408 in auction 201
Item Description
13/16” picturing Mexican sombrero hat with the question above “Who’ll Trim It?” and the answer below “U.S.” (or Us). Curl reads “Pat. Pend’g.” 1/16” tan dot on “Trim” and smaller, lighter age dots around 70% of the extreme edge. Lt. oxidation on the metal back. No maker’s name or backpaper. The history which inspired this button is as follows: In 1914, nine American sailors ashore for supplies were arrested in Tampico. They were released along with an apology but the U.S. Admiral Henry Mayo demanded the raising of the American flag on Mexican soil and a special 21-gun salute. A few days later, President Wilson ordered a U.S. Naval force to Tampico Bay. Word then came to the White House that a German ship was unloading munitions at Vera Cruz and President Wilson ordered the taking of the city, resulting in 17 U.S. deaths and 61 wounded. Eventually, Argentina, Brazil and Chile offered to mediate to forestall additional hostilities and the offer was accepted. Following the incident, the U.S. dead were returned by the battleship Montana. There was a funeral procession from the New York Battery to the Brooklyn Navy Yard, marine barracks. The New York City Mayor and New York State Governor were in attendance and President Wilson was there to eulogize those who “Do Their Duty To Serve Mankind.” That event took place May 12, 1914. See the following button for the return of a Jewish marine to Chicago for burial 2 days later. Rare. See Checkers Confection "Salute The Flag" button #586.
