Item Description
See the previous item for the bkg. to this button. 1.25” with name and photo of young marine captioned below “Died In Serving His Country/April 21st, 1914.” No maker’s name and no backpaper. Trivial general surface wear showing only under magnification. N. Mint and displays Mint. Following funeral ceremonies in New York on May 12th, Meisenberg’s body was sent home to Chicago for burial. A New York Times article published May 14th relates the events. First, at the railroad station, a procession of soldiers, police and civilians was forming to escort the body to City Hall and a street vendor persisted in trying to sell the marine’s mother a postcard picture of her dead son. After arriving at City Hall, there was a panic as reported in the article’s three headlines “Crowd Near Panic At Marine’s Bier/Riot Call Is Sent In When The Great Throng At Chicago Gets Beyond Control/Many Women Overcome.” The following day there was “A Great Procession Of Soldiers, Sailors, National Guardsmen, And Civic Bodies (To) Escort The Body To The Synagogue. Addresses (were) Made By United States Senator Louis, Gov. Dunne And Mayor Harrison.” Rare. From the Morry Greener Collection.
