Item Description
1-5/8” exceedingly early example of a litho tin pocket mirror. Much of the gold luster bkg. color has oxidized leaving gray tone but the design primarily in red, black and yellow remains very intact. Wagon body is composed of a large barrel with the word “Water” printed over it. The slogan thus becomes “I’m On The Water (Wagon) Now.” This phrase and mirror are based on the Prohibition Party campaign slogan which was also a popular song hit of 1903. The song by John Bratton was sung by comic opera comedian Frank Daniels in the musical comedy “The Office Boy.” The song chorus goes “But I’m On The Water Wagon Now; I Never Get A Jag On Now, I’m Riding Smoothly And Lightly; To My Seat I Am Strapped Tightly, For I’m On The Water Wagon Now.” Mirror side of the item is still very reflective with just a little darkening around its extreme perimeter. The earliest piece we’ve seen to use this phrase.
