Item Description
1” reading “Old Jim Crow Has Got To Go! – Jobs – Negro Youth Fed./Nat’l Negro Congress.” Button has New York union bug at lower front center and reverse backpaper by “Krause & Sons” of NYC. Button appears to be from 1936 which is the year black intellectuals, labor organizers and artists formed the National Negro Congress. This federation demanded a “Second Emancipation” for African Americans and over the next decade the group and its off-shoot, the Southern Negro Youth Congress, sought to coordinate anti-racist activism of 75 local groups into a national movement against Jim Crow. The group supported the New Deal but their interests extended to human rights for all Americans. Button is Exc. and displays Mint. Rare.
