Item Description
Research dates this button as being from 1927. Tindley was an American Methodist minister and gospel music composer. He is referred to as “The Prince Of Preachers.” He educated himself and became a minister founding one of the largest Methodist congregations serving the African-American community on the east coast. The Tindley Temple United Methodist Church was founded in 1902 and named for him. He was a noted songwriter and composer of gospel hymns recognized as one of the founding fathers of American gospel music. His composition “I’ll Overcome Some Day” is considered the basis for the U.S. civil rights anthem “We Shall Overcome.” The song, “We Shall Overcome,” was composed by artists at the Highlander Folk School in 1947 but Tindley’s song had been brought to the school in the 1930s by tobacco workers from Charleston, SC. Zilphia Horton, an educator, taught the song at the school where others such as Pete Seeger heard it and Tindley’s refrain was altered from “I’ll Overcome Some Day” to “We Shall Overcome” with the song slowed down to be sung as a march hymn. Button has backpaper by James Spencer & Co. of Philadelphia. N. Mint and displaying Mint. Historic and Rare. The only example known to us.
