Item Description
2-3/8” wide, 7-3/8” tall with ornate relief design of likeness of Athena the Greek goddess of wisdom holding a shield and a spear with snake on one side and owl on other side near her feet. Top is high relief silver plated metal while brush itself is made of horse hair. Silver finish has darkened to a nice patina but could be polished if desired. Exc. The Kansas City Priests of Pallas festival, in the vein of "Mardi Gras", began in October 1887 and has continued off and on until today. Themes have included American History in 1890 and a trip to Mars in 1909 that included one float titled “Wireless Messages.” The cumulation of the week long festival was a masked ball held for 1000 invited guests. Each year a different souvenir was produced to be given to each guest. Only 1000 pieces of each were made, and they would then destroy the mold. This is the souvenir from 1909. Great design with wonderful detail.
