Item numbers 1 through 1408 in auction 201
Item Description
3x5” copyrighted by the Eden Musee. While presented as an automaton, the Ajeeb figure actually concealed a highly skilled human chess player inside. Opponents over the years included Harry Houdini, Theodore Roosevelt and O. Henry, Sarah Bernhardt and Christy Mathewson. Ajeeb is defined in Arabic as strange or un-explainable. The Eden Musee, primarily a wax museum, opened in Manhattan on 23rd Street in 1884 and was run by Richard G. Hollaman & Co. They fell into bankruptcy in 1915 and eventually moved to Coney Island. After demonstrations at the new Coney Island location, Ajeeb was destroyed in a fire in 1928. Card is attached to thin cardboard album page, upper right corner tip is missing a 3/8” narrow piece and lower right corner tip is missing a .5x.75” diagonal piece. Lower left corner tip is missing a .25” piece. Despite problems, remaining image area has a clean and Fine appearance. Bright color and great design showing Ajeeb playing chess with his right hand while holding a hookah in left hand.
