Item Description
Full month of Nov. 1907 “The Inter-Mountain Republican” newspaper from Salt Lake City, Utah. Pages are 17.25x22”. Coverless volume is .75” thick. Four Sunday editions each feature 2 pages of comics in black and white. Contained in these 4 editions are the following- 2 Captain and the Kids, 2 Opper 1-shots, 1 Jimmy by Swinnerton and 4 Buster Browns. Nov. 3rd edition has classic Buster Brown page with Buster buying small bear for $20.00 and running into The Yellow Kid in panel 4. Buster says “I Must Be Dreaming Again.” The Kid answers “I Didn’t Know He Was A Real Person I T’ought He Was Only A Picture Kid.” They go into Brown’s kitchen followed by a talking goat as Tige winks near the door. Maids jump out windows as mother bear comes looking for her cub and pandemonium breaks loose. Bottom 2 panels have everybody rushing for exit. Last panel has Buster saying “I’m Out Just $20.00 That Old Bear Took Her Boy Away.” Art is signed at lower right by cartoonist creator R.F. Outcault. Resolution has text about everybody getting along better together including “A Man Wrote To Me And Roasted Me Because I Don’t Believe In Beating Children – He Does B.B.” Outcault had lost the rights to The Yellow Kid and this is likely only the 3rd or 4th time he actually used The Yellow Kid in a comic strip and also one of the few times The Yellow Kid actually spoke with a word balloon. One Captain and Kids has interesting storyline of Fritz cartooning on the walls of their house. Local news is primarily about election which ended with American Candidate Party John Bransford beating Republican Charles Plummer and Democrat Richard Morris. Nov. 6th paper has results including small headline “Roosevelt Votes At Oyster Bay” and another headline “Election Results Please Roosevelt.” First page has small headline “Indians Get Ugly; 3 Are Slain United States Troops Have A Lively Fight With Red-Skins. Navajos In Southern Utah Refused To Obey Regulations.” Pages are a bit tanned at 3 margin edges. Papers have lt. horizontal fold through center. Noted Buster Brown page has 1.5” tear at bottom margin edge. Overall Fine. Historic Outcault page and interesting reading.
