Item Description
Dated May 1, 1898. 9” wide by 9.25” tall overall with incised text on lid and bottom. U.S. Silverplate Co. No. 57 stamped on underside. Front and back each have 6 hooks for hanging spoons. Lot includes 12 silverplated spoons in sizes ranging from 4” to 4.25” long. Each has relief image on bowl. Five have image of a named General or Admiral at top of handle with various images on bowls. Bowl images include 2 of Morro Castle with same design including General Fitzhugh Lee on handle, one with flagship "New York" with "Admiral Sampson" on handle, one with U.S. Infantry camp in Cuba with commander "General Miles" on handle and one with flagship "Brooklyn" with "Admiral Schley" on handle. Seven remaining spoons have bold image of Battleship Maine in bowl. Of these, two are alike, other 5 are different and one has image of "Captain Sigsbee on handle, other six have plain handles. Spoon holder and several spoons have darkened finish but patina could be cleaned to Exc. appearance if desired. Elaborate designs.
