Item Description
Two items. 18.75x22.25” wood frame has archival mat with 13x16-3/8” opening revealing Sep. 15, 1924 poster issued by Associated News Service. Poster has 2 photos of Firpo fight with Harry Wills. Poster was part of a series created for offices/factories to post at bulletin boards/time clocks for employees’ enjoyment and benefit. This one is Vol. 11, #111 pubished by Elliott Service Co. New York. Exc. as professionally matted and framed. Comes with 8x10” glossy photo of Firpo punching Wills with an overhand right. Reverse side has ink text “Wills Vs. Firpo Boyle’s Thirty Acres Jersey City 1924 Twelve Rounds. Winner Wills On A Decision.” A few lt. handling creases mostly just visible in reflected light. Corner tips have small tack holes. VF. Firpo (1894-1960) began his boxing career in 1917 and became the first Latin American in history to challenge a heavyweight for the title. He fought Jack Dempsey on Sep. 14, 1923 and knocked Dempsey out of the ring which started the phrase “The Long Count.” Dempsey got back in the ring and knocked Firpo out in the second round. The fight is regarded by critics and experts as one of the greatest boxing matches in history. Firpo eventually retired after compiling a record of 32 wins and 6 losses in 38 fights with 26 wins by knock-out. Nice related items. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA.
