Item Description
Four items.  Three news service photos.  First 2 are 6x8" credited to Henry Miller News Picture Service Washington, DC.  Both show him in ring with Jack Dempsey, 1 has original label with text "Tunney Takes Heavyweight Crown From Dempsey."  Gene Tunney, in black trunks and Jack Dempsey sparring during the Philadelphia bout.  Fight was held Sep. 23, 1926.  Tunney won 10-round unanimous decision.  Photos have slight bit of age rippling, most noticeable in reflected light.  One photo is a bit yellowed at right side, both are VF.  Third photo is 7.5x10" showing smiling Tunney shaking hands with New York City Mayor James. J. Walker after Sep. 25, 1925 title fight against Bartley Madden, who he knocked out in round 3.  Daily News photographer Lahmmandas credit on reverse.  Photo has lt. handling crease at left side.  VF.  Sharp image.  8.75x10-7/8" May 1928 Vol. 1, #3 issue of "The Sport News" magazine has nice cover photo of smiling Tunney.  Eighteen pages include article title "The Big Show" with photos of Tunney, Sharkey, Dempsey and Risko.  Centerfold has nicely illustrated 2-page article "Among The Stars" showing baseball players including Hornsby, Gehrig, Cobb.  Front cover has very narrow faint dust streaks around edges.  Trace of lt. aging.  VF.  Gene Tunney (1897-1978) was Light Heavyweight Champion of the world from 1922 to 1926 and then Heavyweight Champion of the world from 1927-1928.  Interesting group of rare items.  From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
