Item Description
7x9-1/8” glossy shows Grimes, pitching star of the St. Louis Cardinals giving female athlete Babe Didrikson “A Few Pointers On How To Throw A Fast One.” Photo is dated 3/14/34. Wide World Photo has caption on backpaper “A Star Of The Track Turns To The Diamond.” Babe is shown in Cleveland Indians unifom and text on back notes “She Is Working Out With The National All-Star Baseball School Preparatory To A Tour Of The Grapefruit League Of Florida With Major League Baseball Clubs. She Is Scheduled To Pitch Against The Cleveland Indians This Saturday.” Photo has some rippling on bottom half from paper caption being glued in place on reverse. Fine. Babe Didrikson Zaharias (1911-1956) achieved outstanding success as a woman in golf, basketball and track and field. She won 2 gold medals and 1 silver medal at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympic Games. She had 43 wins with the LPGA tour. Burleigh Grimes (1893-1985) is recognized as the last pitcher officially permitted to throw a spit ball. Sharp photo is an interesting combination of spitball pitcher and the world’s most famous female athlete at the time. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
