Item Description
Four items. All approximately 3.5x5.5”. One is dated 1907, the others are same vintage. All show 14 players in uniforms. Three cards mention team was established in 1897 and all have Guy Green Lincoln Nebraska manager text on fronts. One color and 2 bw postcards have the same photo showing hatless players in uniform. Fourth postcard shows them in complete uniforms with hats on. Two cards are published by Adolph Selige, St. Louis. Color card published by C.E. Wheelock & Co. Peoria, Illinois. One card is postally used with ink address on reverse, another is addressed in pencil but not mailed, two others unused. Trace of scattered lt. wear and lt. dust soil. A few lt. handling creases here and there. Overall VG/Fine. Manager Green traveled with the team through 1907 as they crisscrossed the country playing town teams that challenged them. The club relied on the American Indian identities of its players to draw large crowds in small towns, in part to appeal to fans with little opportunity to experience a wild west show atmosphere. The Nebraska Indians were one of the most formidable exhibition teams in the country. From 1898, its first winning season, to at least 1914 the team won 1,237 games with 336 losses and 11 ties. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA.
