Item Description
Two items. c. 1910. Postcard is 3-3/8x5.5” showing her full figure in uniform holding ball and glove along with smaller inset photo of her. Title at bottom “Miss Alta Weiss Of The Weiss All-Stars Of Cleveland, Ohio.” Trace of lt. dust soil. Bottom corners have been clipped. Unused. VF. Photo card is 4x7” showing her wearing baseball hat and holding bat in long dress. Bottom has text “Miss Weiss Compliments Of The Vermilion Ohio Independent B.B. Club.” Scattered lt. dust soil, lower right blank margin has a few moisture dots. Blank reverse has numerous pencil notes. Fine. Alta Weiss (1890-1964) was an American Minor League baseball pitcher from Ohio. At age 16, she joined the men’s semi-professional team the Vermillion Independents. She gave up only 4 hits and a single run in 5 innings. Her baseball skills helped put her through medical school where she was the only female to graduate with the class of 1914. Even after she began practicing medicine, she continued to play off and on into the 1920s. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
