Item Description
16.5x21” wood frame has 14.5x19” opening revealing wonderful image of heavyweight champion Joe Louis looking at viewer holding his glove up to his chin. Art is done in pencil and watercolor and signed at lower right “Zito.” c. late 1930s. Vincento Zito was an internationally known caricaturist from the 1920s into the 1950s. Vintage frame has wear around edges. Fine. Art board is lightly but evenly tanned, o/w Exc. A classic early image of Joe Louis done by a wonderful artist who is also famous for his drawings of dogs (See his “More Dogs” signed book #2100.) Zito art is rare and this is a wonderful watercolor. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA.
