Item numbers 1 through 1553 in auction 202
Item Description
First two taken same day. First is 3x4.5" image on 3.5x6" mount. Ink dated 10-18-11. Ink notation of McNamara/Sheriff and Deputy on back. Second is 5x7" glossy photo with ink/pencil notations on back. Identifying same three. This 1911 labor related trial involved brothers James B. and John J. McNamara accused of murder and dynamiting the Los Angeles Times building. The trial and confessions of guilt by the brothers set the cause of organized labor on the west coast back by decades. It also nearly ruined career of Clarence Darrow, one of America's leading criminal defense lawyers. James B. was accused of bombing the Los Angeles Times building which killed 21 people. The Times was the arch enemy of the International Association of Bridge and Structural Iron Workers in which the brothers were very active. Brother John was accused of bombing an ironworks days after the Times bombing. The trial lasted for one short but memorable day. When Judge Bordwell called the case of People vs. James B. McNamara, defense lawyer Le Compte Davis rose to his feet and said "Your Honor, the defendant is in court...we have concluded to withdraw the plea of not guilt, and have the defendant enter in this case a plea of guilty. A like course we intend to pursue with reference to J.J. McNamara." James was sentenced to life imprisonment and John sentenced to 15 years. The final 4.5x7.5" press release photo with trimmed edges shows James in prison cell with shackles on his legs, wearing prison uniform and holding Bible and loaf of bread next to dinner pail. Back stamped in ink reads "Taken over from Detroit Journal July 1922" but photo likely a decade earlier. An interesting group. VF.
