Item Description
Two items. c.1910. .75" early version of what today is called a tab consisting of a pair of .25" tapered tin prongs on the back and front art image in center of monkey wearing boxing gloves with tail wrapped around tree limb along with text which equates to “ Don’t Monkey With Me”. Two lt. rub lines on varnished surface but paint remains glossy and intact with no bare metal showing. Fine. This image of a monkey with boxing gloves most likely is from around Jim Crow 1910 when Jeffries was The Great White Hope and Jack Johnson was being mercilessly ridiculed as sub-human. Comes with 3 3/8x5 3/8" postcard showing three men wearing white shirts, ties and hats with sashes across chest reading “Don’t Monkey With Me”. Postally unused but blank reverse has a few pencil marks and lower right extreme corner tip on front has tiny flake missing in blank area. Fine. Rare items without a definite link but likely related to the 1910 fight which Johnson won.
