Item Description
3.5x5-3/8" with photo of Flynn at left and Johnson at right set against countryside with hotel in bkg. Has text at bottom "Las Vegas N.M. July 4 1912" Postmarked May 29, 1912 and addressed to W.J. Scott of the Omaha "World-Herald" newspaper with ink message including "I Hope You Will Not Need That New Material Before I Get There. Everybody Here Is Fight Crazy. BM Barndollar Keystone Type". Photo emulsion has yellowed a bit with age and card has trace of lt. dust soil, most noticeable on reverse. Portion of postage stamp is missing. No creases. Overall Fine/VF. Even though Jack Johnson was Heavyweight Champion of the World at this time, he was still billed after his white opponents as shown on this card. Flynn and Johnson had fought before when Johnson knocked out Flynn in 1907. Johnson knocked out Flynn in this match but in the 9th round. Interesting and historic. See program for this fight #1340. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
