Item Description
Lot of four c. 1909-1911. All are postally unused. Each is 3.5x5.5". First card is English, showing little boy training to be a boxer with poster of Johnson on the wall and text at bottom "Oh! Where Is He, The Simple Fool, Who Says Our Day Is Over?" Art is signed T. Gilson. Second postcard is French showing Johnson in pink boxing trunks being approached by prostitutes in brothel with title that translates to "The Envy Of The Deadly Sins". Art is by Xavier Sager. Exc. Third is German with date of 1909 titled "Champion" on front showing large gorilla in boxing ring with kangaroo in corner wearing boxing gloves behind him. An obvious reference to Johnson hunting kangaroos in Australia as recounted in the book "Mes Combats", see item #1335. Exc. Fourth postcard is British and titled "Great Boxing Contest! Match Arranged Between Kaiser Bill And Black Johnson" with cartoon at top of Johnson looking nervous saying "Golly! Is That The Mailed Fist?" with Kaiser wearing a boxing glove with sharp points. Card addresses Wilhelm's anti-English comments. Exc. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
