Item Description
4.25x6.25" photo showing Lloyd in Almendares uniform batting. c.1924-1926. Reverse has Spanish photographer Jose Luis Lopez Gomez ink stamp. Emulsion has yellowed a bit with age, photo has lt. curl and lower right has four creases in 1x1.25" area. Photo overall VG but still has sharp crisp image. Lloyd (1884-1964) is considered the greatest short-stop in Negro League history. He began playing professionally in 1905 and batted .475 with the Lincoln Giants in 1911. He became their player/manager in 1912 and 1913. He went on to play with the New York based Lincoln Stars and the American Giants and in 1918 served as player/manager of the Brooklyn Royal Giants. He organized the Columbus Buckeyes in 1921 and the Hilldale club in 1923 guiding them to a 13-17 league record. He hit .444 with the Eastern Colored League in 1924 and finished his career managing the Bacharach Giants in 1931-32. Altogether he spent 12 seasons in the Cuban League, batting .329 for his career. His Negro League batting average was .343. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA.
