3 3/8x5 3/8" shows Hall of Famer Andrew “Rube” Foster, the owner of the Chicago American Giants, wearing a Giants uniform standing second from left along with Indianapolis ABC’s Manager C.I. Taylor standing at far right wearing Indianapolis uniform. Two other well-dressed men are in the photo as large crowd looks on from stands in background. Rube Foster’s Giants won every championship from 1910 through 1922 except for this one in 1916. See previous item team photo #1398. Reverse side has pencil text “2 Col Sport Negro Baseball” with ink stamp text “Monday”. Postcard was obviously used for news service photo. Right side of photo has vertical lead pencil photographers crop mark and bottom right of photo has 3" diagonal crease repaired on reverse with yellowed cellophane tape. Most of image area is VG. Andrew “Rube” Foster (1879-1930) is considered to have been one of the best African-American pitchers of the 1900s. He founded and managed the Chicago American Giants and organized the Negro National League which operated from 1920 to 1931. He made his professional debut in 1902 as a pitcher for the Chicago Union Giants and played for the Cuban X-Giants in 1903, the Philadelphia Giants 1904-06, the Leland Giants 1907-10 and the Chicago American Giants from 1911 to 1917. He managed the Leland Giants/American Giants between 1911 and 1926. A rare and incredibly desirable card with an historic image. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA.
