Item Description
1-3/8" (35mm) complete with original shank. Cataloged by Alphaeus Albert in his 1976 book Record Of American Uniform And Historical Buttons as Washington Inaugural # 12B and by Dewitt as GW 1789-3. This size and design is known with border accent indent marks totaling 49, 54, 63 or 72. This is the version with 54. Known as "Eagle With Star," displaying an eagle with shield between the spread wings, olive branch in right talons and three arrows in the left. The "Star" above is a heraldic Estoile with alternating wavy rays between the six arms of the star. Both sides have over two centuries of uniformly dark patina, having never been cleaned. There is very shallow pitting over the field with heavier pitting on the extreme outer edge, but only a very narrow band. All design features remain clean. Small visible traces of original silvering that once covered the copper remain on the reverse. In 1976, Albert designated this design "R5" (6-10 known) on a scale with "R7" the highest (1 or 2 known). Complete with shank and very good condition.
