Item Description
1" by St. Louis Button Co. Crystal clear photo taken at "New Salem State Park." The Herdon brothers built this store likely in the fall of 1831. James Herdon sold his interest to William F. Berry early in the summer of 1832 and later in the same year Rowan Herdon sold his interest to Abraham Lincoln, taking Lincoln's note in payment. Lincoln served as Postmaster in New Salem from May 1833 to May 1836, when the office was discontinued. Button was perhaps issued for the event when the post office was reestablished February 12, 1940. Rare and Mint. Also see Lincoln buttons 823-824 and rare mirror # 179.
