Item Description
Leather covered hinged wooden case is 2-7/8" square by 9/16" thick. Front cover shows wear including rectangle where a sticker removed some surface color. Much of the leather is off the side edges so the brass hinges show. Clasp still functions and the open case on the left has gold on purple fabric with the name of the organization and date. On the right hand side purple velvet lines the insert with the recess to hold the medal. The medal is 2" in dia. by 1/8" thick with a weight slightly exceeding two ounces. Front carries the name of the engraver S.M. Mitchell. Beautifully detailed scene of woman in flowing robe seated amidst many implements of science and industry plus in the background a steam train crosses a bridge. Shield next to her has arm with hammer emerging from clouds with edges of shield bearing a ribbon with text "Be Just And Fear Not." Reverse of the medal repeats the arm and hammer motif, lists the name of the organization, and at center reads "Awarded At The Eighteenth Exhibition 1892." Medal has two virtual pinpoint nicks on right front rim edge barely showing and condition is otherwise Mint and still with highly reflective surfaces. This silver, rather than bronze, version is quite scarce.
