Auction #183 - Part II
Item numbers 1292-2528 in auction 183
Item Description
In 1958 J. H. Miller Mfg. Co. issued a series of 18 plastic figures depicting strange and unusual space creatures and marketed them as "Earth Invaders." This is a complete set of all 18. Comes w/bw photocopy of a page from the directory issue of the trade publication "Toys And Novelties" which is a full page ad for these figures. The ad states that there were 12 available for 15¢ and six available for 10¢, therefore, reiterating the fact that there were 18 in the set. The ad itself shows only 12 different figures. The figures range in size from 2.25" to 4.75" tall. Each has raised name on base or on the figure itself. Those w/names of planets are Mercury, Mars, Pluto, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Venus and Neptune. The others include two different "Moon Man" figures, "North Star, Big Dipper, Orion, Milky Way, Ceres, Nebula, Betelguese." Final figure is of a one-eyed, one-horned flying "Purple People Eater" produced to capitalize on the novelty song which was #1 for six weeks in 1958. The creature is depicted holding a music note. All of the figures are quite interesting but some of the standouts include Nebula which is a two-headed creature, Betelguese who is shown exiting his rocket ship and holding a ray gun, Mercury which is a two-headed robot, Pluto which is a dragon-like creature, Uranus which is a giant w/disproportionate body holding club and Neptune which is a six-legged insect creature w/claw jaw and holds two guns. All have different colored painted accents. Small scattered traces of paint wear to these accents but all largely remains. Only notable defect is a neat reglue to one of Neptune's legs. Overall set is Exc. Many of these figures are quite scarce on their own, extremely rare to be found as a complete set.
