Item Description
2x2-5/8" Cuban card issued as a premium by Billiken brand cigars. Cards in this set feature players from the 1923-24 Cuban Professional League. The set includes 15 cards each for the four teams that participated that season. Glossy front features a bw photo, players name and team "Torriente. Marianao B.B.C." Great crisp, clear image. The back of the card has an ad for "Billiken." Cards in this elusive set are among the scarcest and most popular of the pre-war Cuban issues and this is one of the key cards from the set. Cristobal Torriente (1893-1938) began playing professionally with the Cuban Stars of the Negro League in 1913, and led the American Giants to Negro National League pennants between 1920 and 1922. He had a .412 batting average in 1923 and a .381 average with the Kansas City Monarchs in 1926. He holds the Cuban League record batting average of .352 and hit as high as .402 with Almendares. Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2006. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
