1950-1951 TOLETEROS & TOLETEROS IN ACTION COMPLETE CARD SETS IN ALBUM INCLUDING JOSHUA GIBSON CARD.
Item Description
Three Toleteros card sets were issued during the Puerto Rican League winter seasons starting in 1948-1949. This 1950-1951 complete 9x12", 22 page album is for the third and final issue, by far the most sought after and desirable set for a variety of reasons, first and a foremost being the inclusion of the legendary and historic Josh Gibson card (see rare Gibson photograph item #1401). For this year, two different sets were issued. The first set is 180 unnumbered player cards while the second set is 178 numbered "In Action" cards. This album is complete with both sets and all have been neatly mounted at appropriate spots as intended. Technically there are 192 cards in the numbered set when considering the 12 variants, but album is designed to hold just one of each card, not any variants, so complete as intended, no open spots in the album. Cards are 1.75x2.5". Included in the set are stars of both Major League and Negro League baseball. While the Gibson card is the true standout, other key cards include: Willard Brown, Francisco Coimbre, James Gilliam, Rogers Hornsby, Alonso Perry, Dick Seay, Valmy Thomas, Bob Thurman, Tetelo Vargas. The "In Action" cards mostly feature multiple players in on-the-field shots. While Josh Gibson is not featured on any of the "In Action" cards, there are four cards with Willard Brown (see postcard item #1410) as well as other stars also featured in the unnumbered set. Front cover features illustration of a pitcher in throwing pose set against a large baseball. At lower left are team names and logo/mascot images. First page has information on this series and album. All remaining pages have mounted cards, 16-18 per page. Cover has moderate wear/aging with staples added to spine, scattered creases and some small edge tears. The first text page has clear tape strip repairs to tears. All pages have heavy margin wear with small tears. Pages also all have vertical fold at center with additional split/tear along this of 3" to 5". One page is torn in half but both halves remain. Much of this wear is caused by the weight of the album as the thin pages do not hold up to the overall weight once all cards are mounted so it easily bends at the center point. However, none of the cards are affected by this, none of the cards themselves have any tears, just the pages at points around the cards. Cards do exhibit all over general wear/aging as mounted, with some scattered staining, color rubs, etc. The Josh Gibson card has trace of margin aging but border still remains white, card has a glossy appearance and corners are sharp. The unnumbered Willard Brown card has corner bump and some spotting. Card condition varies but overall, and for the most part, cards visually grade VG as mounted but with some in lower and some in higher grades.
