Item Description
The heroine of the title was created by a young Stan Lee and the artist Syd Shores. The Sub-Mariner begins a short run as a back-up feature in the title with this issue. This cover is noted for its light bondage overtones and its Hollywood theme. After WWII superheroes were dropping in popularity, Timely Publishing had occasionally introduced female heroes such as Namora and Golden Girl. The Blonde Phantom made her first appearance in All-Select Comics #11. She took over the title and the cover with the next issue. This is the second issue in her run. The book lasted until 1949 when it was changed to the romance title Lovers with issue #22. The Blonde Phantom was also seen as a back-up feature in other Timely titles. In addition, she also graced the cover of the revived All-Winners v2 #1. (That book is also listed for auction in this catalog). By day, she was the secretary of a private investigator; at night she would put on a costume and helped her boss solve crimes. Her costume is notable for being less revealing than the standard bathing suit variety usually given to female superheroes, but the bare-midriff and the slit in the skirt had their own appeal to young readers. She also carried a gun. For those who wonder what ever happened to her, it was revealed in She-Hulk #4 (1989) that she had married the private eye and ended up raising a couple of kids. Now a widow, her daughter briefly donned the costume of the Blonde Phantom. The pages are cream to off-white. The book is CGC-certified 9.4 (NM). According to the CGC census this copy is tied with one other as the highest graded copy they have seen.
