Item Description
This title is still one of the most exciting in the history of comics. The various heroes meet at the beginning of the book and then go their own ways in order to deal with the problem. The membership of the JSA varied over the years, and this issue features eight of the best heroes of the Golden Age. Each one appears in a five-page part of the story. The story itself is written by one of the most prodigious and highly respected writers of comics and science fiction, Gardner Fox. The plot revolves around an exterminator who found a way to “isolate the insect hormone”. The artists who contributed to this book read like a who’s who of the Golden Age. The cover is by Frank Harry and it has to be one of the more gruesome ones in the title’s history. It is also a wonderful representation of all the heroes involved in the story. By placing the action against a nondescript black background, the fearsome nature of the monster is dramatically highlighted. Among the other artists are Sheldon Moldoff (Hawkman), Bernard Baily (The Spectre), Howard Sherman (Dr. Fate), and Stan Aschmeier who works on Dr. Mid-Nite. (The Dr. Mid-Nite story has an interesting historical note. In it, he makes direct mention of having to find those Spider-Men). Each hero eventually finds out that the King Bee is behind the crimes. The other members featured in this issue are Starman, The Atom, Sandman and Johnny Thunder. While Wonder Woman is mentioned on the cover, she does not have her own story; instead she appears as the secretary. The pages are off-white to white. The book is CGC-certified 8.5 (VF+). According to the CGC Census, this copy is tied with one other as the third highest-graded copy they have seen.
